Recognized by both Apple and Google, Maliyo Games, a pioneering game development studio based in Lagos, continues to elevate African narratives within the global gaming arena.
Hugo Obi, the visionary behind Maliyo Games, expressed pride in this dual acknowledgment, stating, “Being highlighted by Apple and recently by Google reinforces our mission to showcase African stories on an international platform.”
Obi emphasized that this acclaim is supported by a vibrant network of African creatives. Since its inception in 2021, GameUp Africa has served as a vital incubator, nurturing over 6,000 emerging developers from 20 countries across the continent. The initiative equips young talents with expertise in coding, game artistry, and sound design, fueling Maliyo’s innovative projects.
Apple’s editorial celebrating Nigeria’s Independence Day prominently featured Maliyo’s acclaimed games such as Safari City, Crazy Ludo, Whot King, and Secret Letter. Each title uniquely integrates engaging gameplay with rich African cultural elements, including storytelling, visuals, and music.
Earlier this year, Google Play spotlighted Maliyo in its #WeArePlay campaign, a worldwide film series honoring diverse creators who are shaping the future landscape of gaming.
The campaign narrates the journey of Hugo Obi and his studio’s rise from Lagos to global recognition. It also highlights GameUp Africa’s role in cultivating the continent’s next wave of game developers and creative entrepreneurs.
“From the dynamic urban environment depicted in Safari City to the traditional themes woven into Whot King, our games deliver authentic African experiences through mobile-friendly gameplay,” Obi noted. “Graduates of our program have contributed to notable projects and launched their own studios, demonstrating the impact of Maliyo’s dedication to empowering African storytellers.”
Looking ahead, Maliyo Games plans to host its inaugural developer-driven conference, MaliyoCON, this December in Lagos. The event aims to bring together creators, investors, policymakers, and innovators to discuss how African narratives can influence the next chapter of the global gaming industry.
“By gathering key industry figures, Maliyo intends to solidify Africa’s position not merely as a participant but as a cultural force shaping the future of mobile entertainment,” Obi concluded.
