Mariah Carey opens up about famous J.Lo diss that shook pop culture

More than 20 years after one of pop culture’s most legendary moments, Mariah Carey has finally reflected on her infamous “I don’t know her” remark about Jennifer Lopez.

The comment, delivered during an early-2000s interview when Carey was asked about Lopez, went on to become a meme, a cultural reference point, and shorthand for celebrity shade.

For years, fans have speculated on the true meaning behind the line, with debates about whether it was intentional shade, a genuine dismissal, or simply her was of dismissing J.Lo.

However, in an interview with Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live which was aired on Thursday, Mariah was asked to relive the moment again, more than two decades after.

“The thing is, I was being honest when I said it,” the Grammy winner insisted. “I don’t know how it became so big. Honesty isn’t really something that becomes big most of the time.”

And when the host asked if Mariah was any closer to “knowing” her fellow performer all these years down the line, she responded with a laugh: “How can I suddenly know…? Like, you know?”
