Threads introduces Communities feature, turns up heat on Elon Musk’s X

Meta’s fast-rising social platform, Threads, has rolled out a new Communities feature, a move widely seen as a direct challenge to Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter).

The update allows users to create and join interest-based groups, where conversations can be more structured and topic-focused — similar to Reddit forums or Facebook Groups, but integrated into Threads’ growing ecosystem.

Communities are designed to give users a sense of belonging and deeper engagement, moving the app beyond individual posts and timelines.

According to a statement from Meta, the goal is to provide “users with specific areas within the app where they can delve deeper into conversations on topics that matter to them.” Each community has its own unique “Like” emoji that people who participate in the conversations can use. Users’ Threads profiles will show the communities they have joined.

Analysts say the move could be a turning point for Threads, which has been positioning itself as a friendlier, conversation-first alternative to X. While Musk’s platform leans heavily on news, politics, and live commentary, Threads’ Communities are expected to attract users around hobbies, lifestyle interests, and niche discussions.

The launch also signals Meta’s intent to keep scaling Threads rapidly, as the platform has already crossed 200 million active users since its debut in mid-2023. Communities could deepen retention, boost user interaction, and strengthen Threads’ battle for dominance in the microblogging and real-time conversation space.
