ABUJA – The Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, conducted a thorough review of several road construction projects in Abuja on Saturday, with particular focus on the much-anticipated Airport-Kuje expressway. He confidently pledged that this vital infrastructure would be finalized and officially opened within President Bola Tinubu’s first term.

During a briefing with the press following the site visit, Wike highlighted that the Kuje expressway, designed as an eight-lane dual carriageway, is set to significantly reduce the commute to Abuja’s city center to under 20 minutes once fully operational.

Despite the challenging terrain, the project-being executed by Arab Contractors-has seen commendable advancement. “We have inspected this site multiple times, at least seven or eight visits, and the progress is impressive. With continued support and the contractors’ dedication, we are confident the road will be ready for inauguration before the president’s third year in office,” Wike remarked.

The minister emphasized that this development aligns with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, envisioning Kuje as a thriving residential area that will alleviate housing demand pressures in central Abuja.

Addressing concerns about security within the Federal Capital Territory, Wike refuted claims that Abuja is unsafe. He argued that isolated incidents should not overshadow the overall advancements in safety. He cited the Light Up Abuja initiative, which not only beautifies the city but also enhances security through improved lighting.

“Abuja remains among the safest cities nationwide. While incidents may occur, this does not equate to the city being unsafe. Even in countries like the United States, where shootings happen, the nation is not labeled unsafe. Our security forces deserve commendation,” he stated.

On the issue of waste management, Wike announced that new contracts would be awarded within the next two weeks to address the problem of indiscriminate refuse dumping. He assured that only qualified contractors equipped with the necessary resources would be engaged, contrasting with previous practices where politically connected but incapable contractors were hired.

“Currently, clearing operations are underway along the Airport Road and Nyanya-Karshi routes. We are committed to improving waste disposal systems throughout the city and its surrounding satellite towns,” the minister added.

When residents from federal housing estates in satellite towns raised concerns about deteriorating road conditions, Wike, known for his candid remarks, humorously responded, “Tell them to keep fasting,” eliciting laughter from the gathered journalists.
