Okpebholo Launches Dynamic New Committee to Combat Drug Abuse

Okpebholo Inaugurates Committee Against Drug Abuse

Senator Monday Okpeholo, the governor of Edo State, has officially launched a comprehensive drug control committee at both the state and local government levels to strengthen efforts against drug abuse throughout the region.

Governor Okpeholo emphasized that this initiative marks a crucial milestone in Edo State’s dedication to eradicating drug trafficking and curbing substance misuse, particularly among young people.

Speaking through his deputy, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa, the governor expressed deep concern over the escalating problem of drug addiction and its detrimental effects on the community.

According to a statement from Mr. Friday Aghedo, Chief Press Secretary to the deputy governor, Governor Okpeholo highlighted that the formation of this committee is in line with the national drug masterplan, representing a proactive measure to safeguard future generations.

Brigadier-General Buba Marwa, Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), was represented by ACGN Fidelis Cocodia, the Zonal Commander for Zone 13, who stressed the importance of grassroots engagement, public education campaigns, and robust support networks as essential components in combating drug abuse.

Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, Edo State’s NDLEA Commander, revealed that while the national average for drug use prevalence is 14.4 percent, Edo State exceeds this figure at 15 percent.

He warned that Edo is among the states most severely affected by drug abuse, a trend that has contributed to increased criminal activity and heightened risks for the youth population.

Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, the state’s Commissioner for Health, committed to positioning Edo as a leading example in drug control through initiatives focused on rehabilitation, youth education, and providing renewed opportunities for those recovering from addiction.

Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, Coordinator of the Office of the Edo State First Lady, characterized drug abuse as a widespread crisis, noting the strong link between drug use and criminal behavior.

She further emphasized the critical role of women’s compassion and leadership in driving the campaign against drug abuse forward.
