Nick Woltemade continued his impressive form, netting his fourth goal in five appearances as Newcastle United secured a 2-0 triumph over Nottingham Forest at St. James’ Park on Sunday. This victory intensified the scrutiny on manager Ange Postecoglou.
The German forward, who had earlier struck the woodwork, confidently converted a penalty in the 84th minute to extend Newcastle’s advantage, following an opening goal from Bruno Guimarães. Despite Forest’s spirited efforts, this marked Postecoglou’s seventh match at the helm without a win since replacing Nuno Espírito Santo.
With this outcome, Postecoglou faces mounting pressure as the international break approaches, while Forest remain eager to claim their first success under his leadership.
Although Newcastle did not replicate the dominant display from their recent 4-0 Champions League victory against Union St. Gilloise, they earned the three points through grit and determination, even as fatigue occasionally showed.
Returning to St. James’ Park, former Newcastle goalkeeper Matz Sels impressed with several key saves. Early on, he denied Joelinton‘s attempt after a precise assist from Kieran Trippier. Sels thwarted Joelinton again following a 15th-minute corner expertly flicked on by Sven Botman. Meanwhile, Nick Pope was called into action to parry a well-struck free-kick from Morgan Gibbs-White.
Trippier played a crucial defensive role, blocking a chance for former teammate Chris Wood in the 22nd minute. Wood had capitalized on Gibbs-White’s cross after the midfielder skillfully controlled Sels’ clearance and linked up with Ryan Yates to penetrate Newcastle’s defense.
Despite controlling possession for much of the first half, Newcastle found it difficult to break down Forest’s disciplined defensive setup, resulting in a goalless first 45 minutes.
