Google has unveiled a new initiative offering university students across Africa complimentary access to its premium AI platform, Google AI Pro, powered by Gemini 2.5 Pro, for an entire year.
This exclusive opportunity, running from October 7 to December 9, 2025, targets students in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Rwanda, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, granting them unrestricted use of Google’s cutting-edge AI technologies to enhance their academic research, creative projects, and overall learning experience.
The goal behind this program is to cultivate essential AI competencies among students, preparing them for a future workforce increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence advancements.
Alex Okosi, Managing Director for Google in Sub-Saharan Africa, emphasized, “Africa’s youth are fueling a remarkable surge of innovation. By equipping students with our most sophisticated AI tools, we aim to empower them not only to thrive academically but also to become influential innovators and leaders in tomorrow’s world.”
Valued at ₦28,500 ($19.39) per month, the premium subscription offers a suite of features designed to facilitate comprehensive research, including summarizing scholarly articles, generating detailed reports from online sources, and troubleshooting programming code.
Additionally, students will benefit from access to Google’s productivity tools such as NotebookLM for efficient note management, Veo3 for transforming text or images into polished presentations, and 2 TB of cloud storage usable across Google Drive, Gmail, and Photos.
To qualify, students need a Google account and must verify their enrollment by submitting a valid school ID, class timetable, and tuition payment receipt through Google’s verification portal. The verification process is handled by SheerID, a trusted data verification platform, which typically completes reviews within minutes. While students must provide payment details during registration, no charges will be applied.
This initiative builds upon Google’s ongoing commitment to Africa’s digital growth, complementing programs like Google for Startups Accelerator Africa-which has supported over 140 startups in 17 countries-and Digital Skills for Africa, which has empowered millions with essential digital knowledge.
Okosi added, “Our mission is to democratize technology access, enabling African students to gain the skills necessary to compete and lead on a global scale.”
