Gisèle Pelicot Breaks Silence at Appeal Trial: “I Never Gave Consent” to Man Convicted of Rape

Gisèle Pelicot tells appeal trial she never gave consent to man convicted of rape

During the retrial of Husamettin Dogan, a woman courageously declared that “no survivor should ever bear the burden of shame” as the court reviewed video evidence.

Gisèle Pelicot, who endured nearly ten years of sexual assault by multiple men after being drugged into unconsciousness by her former spouse, testified before a French court that she never consented to any abuse while incapacitated. She emphasized that victims must never feel guilt or embarrassment for crimes committed against them.

Speaking at the appeal hearing of the unemployed construction worker challenging his rape conviction, Pelicot stated: “The damage inflicted on me is irreversible-I am in the process of healing and rebuilding my life. However, my message to others is clear: I have never regretted taking legal action, from the very beginning until now. To all survivors, I urge you to reject any shame tied to what was forced upon you, as you bear no fault.”
