ABUJA: On Tuesday evening, prominent figures from Nigeria’s political and social spheres convened in Abuja to commemorate the life and legacy of the late Chief Cornelius Olatunji Adebayo, former Governor of Kwara State, who died on June 25, 2025, at 81 years old.
The tribute event attracted notable personalities including former Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki; Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, former Chief of Staff to the late President Muhammadu Buhari; influential entrepreneur Bola Shagaya; ex-Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Hon. Emeka Ihedioha; Senator Dino Melaye; Frank Nweke Jr.; and Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, Director-General of NAFDAC, among others.
Known affectionately as “C.O.,” Adebayo’s journey from educator to a distinguished political figure marked several milestones in Nigeria’s history. His career spanned roles as Commissioner, Senator, Governor of Kwara State, and Minister overseeing Communications, Works, and Housing. He was also a key activist within NADECO, the pro-democracy group that championed the recognition of the June 12, 1993 presidential election results.
Prof. Ibrahim Gambari reminisced about their early days at Ilorin Provincial School, highlighting Adebayo’s role as a mentor and disciplinarian. “He instilled in me the value of humility. I was quite mischievous back then, but he once pulled me aside and said, ‘Agboola, remember, when you act out, people will blame it on your royal lineage.’ That advice has stayed with me ever since,” Gambari shared.
He further commended Adebayo’s unwavering integrity during politically charged times, recalling an incident where Adebayo advised a sitting governor against election manipulation. Gambari also fondly remembered his friend’s sharp wit and warm humor, which left lasting impressions on those around him.
Former Senate President Bukola Saraki praised Adebayo as a steadfast democrat who made significant sacrifices for Nigeria’s freedom. “We owe a debt of gratitude to a man who gave so much for the democracy we enjoy today,” Saraki emphasized.
The most heartfelt tribute was delivered by Adebayo’s daughter, Oloruntoyosi Ayobola Ebun, who spoke on behalf of the family. She shared poignant memories from the turbulent NADECO era in the 1990s, revealing how her father prepared his children for the possibility of his arrest or worse. “He told us plainly, ‘One day, they might come for me. I may leave and never return.’ From that moment, he always carried a small bag with essentials, ready for detention,” she recounted.
She described how this bravery was a defining feature throughout Adebayo’s public service. “He bore the weight of power as a sacred duty to God and the people. He was incorruptible and unyielding, always standing firm on his principles,” she added.
Oloruntoyosi also painted a touching picture of her father as a devoted family man. “He cared for my mother with a dedication few could match and was the most loving yet disciplined grandfather. His affection was deeply felt, even in moments of quiet,” she said, her voice heavy with emotion.
Highlighting his moral fortitude, one of Adebayo’s protégés, Dr. Atte, recounted an episode where Adebayo refused a bribe of £500,000. “He said, ‘No sir, I will not betray my people,'” Atte declared, earning resounding applause from the audience.
