Varsity Workers to Rally This Thursday Demanding Unpaid Salaries and More

Varsity workers to protest unpaid salaries, others on Thursday

The Joint Action Committee (JAC), representing the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) alongside the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), has called on its members to stage a one-day strike this Thursday to press for resolution of outstanding issues.

This announcement was made through a circular sent to all branch leaders, jointly endorsed by NASU’s General Secretary, Mr. Peters Adeyemi, and SSANU’s National President, Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim.

The directive comes after the Federal Government repeatedly failed to resolve persistent concerns raised by the unions, despite multiple deadline extensions granted for compliance.

Key grievances highlighted include the inequitable distribution of N50 billion in earned allowances and the prolonged delay in revisiting the 2009 agreement between NASU, SSANU, and the Federal Government.

Additional complaints involve unpaid salaries spanning two months, outstanding arrears related to 25% and 35% salary increments, and the failure to remit third-party deductions for May and June 2022.

They emphasized that although the Minister of Education established a Joint Consultative Committee to address these matters, the two meetings held so far-on September 19 and October 6 at the Permanent Secretary’s Conference Room in Abuja-have not yielded meaningful outcomes or firm commitments from government representatives.

In light of this stagnation, the committee has instructed all university and inter-university centre branches to convene a joint congress on Wednesday to galvanize members ahead of the protest.

Planned protest activities will encompass campus prayer gatherings, marches, placard displays, and media briefings to articulate the unions’ demands clearly.

Members across both federal and state universities have been strongly encouraged to participate actively in the demonstration.
