ABUJA – The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has openly disputed recent actions by the Federal Ministry of Youth Development and the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), which reportedly annulled its certificate of incorporation and appointed an interim management committee. The Council denounced these moves as unlawful and an overreach of authority.
In a formal communiqué signed by Ambassador Sukubo Sara-Igbe Sukubo, NYCN President, the organization reaffirmed that the leadership under Ambassador Sukubo remains the only legitimate and legally recognized governing body, as upheld by the Federal High Court.
The statement cited the legal proceedings in Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/1553/2022, Incorporated Trustees of the National Youth Council of Nigeria & 4 Ors vs Corporate Affairs Commission & 3 Ors, where Hon. Justice D.U. Okorowo validated the Council’s certificate of incorporation and confirmed Sukubo’s leadership as lawful.
“The Federal High Court ruling unequivocally recognized Ambassador Sukubo Sara-Igbe Sukubo’s administration as the authentic and legally established leadership of the NYCN, alongside affirming the Council’s incorporation status,” the release stressed.
NYCN also noted that the matter is presently under consideration at the Court of Appeal, Appeal No: CA/ABJ/CV/13081/2023, with both the CAC and the Federal Ministry of Youth Development named as respondents.
Given the ongoing judicial review, the Council emphasized that any attempts to revoke, suspend, or modify its incorporation status amount to unwarranted administrative interference in a case still before the courts.
“Legal doctrine forbids any party-be it an individual, faction, or government agency-from overriding or pre-empting a court’s decision. Hence, the recent actions by the Registrar-General and the Honourable Minister of Youth Development represent an unnecessary provocation,” Sukubo remarked.
The Council called on all its state chapters, zonal coordinators, affiliated bodies, and Nigerian youths nationwide to disregard any declarations or initiatives purporting to dissolve or supplant the current leadership.
“The Federal High Court judgment by Hon. Justice D.U. Okorowo, which upheld the NYCN’s incorporation certificate, remains valid and binding until reversed by a higher court. Therefore, Ambassador Sukubo Sara-Igbe Sukubo’s leadership continues to be legitimate, authoritative, and respected both legally and practically,” the Council affirmed.
NYCN urged its members to remain calm, respect the rule of law, and stay focused on advancing the Council’s objectives in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu‘s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“We call on all members to stay united and committed to building a cohesive, progressive National Youth Council of Nigeria that genuinely embodies the aspirations of Nigerian youth,” Sukubo concluded.
