The Coalition of Opposition Legislators has warmly welcomed the appointment of Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, as the incoming chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). They have urged him to forge a legacy that reflects the trust Nigerians have invested in his leadership.
In a statement delivered by their representative, Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere (PDP, Imo), the coalition emphasized the importance of prioritizing the welfare and interests of Nigerian citizens above partisan politics. They encouraged Prof. Amupitan to leverage his extensive legal expertise and administrative acumen to spearhead impactful electoral reforms upon assuming office.
“As opposition members, we commend the President’s decision to appoint Amupitan as INEC Chairman. His impressive academic background and professional credentials make him an ideal candidate for this role. Having served as a university lecturer, Pro-Chancellor, and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, he possesses the qualifications necessary to excel,” the spokesperson stated.
“Prof. Amupitan’s profound grasp of electoral disputes and the systemic flaws within Nigeria’s electoral process, combined with his scholarly and legal prowess, equip him uniquely to address these challenges decisively. There is every reason to trust in his ability to deliver results,” the coalition added.
They further noted, “No accusations of impropriety have been associated with him; had there been any, we would have opposed his nomination. It is only fair to evaluate his tenure based on his professional conduct. We advocate giving him the opportunity to settle into the position before passing judgment on his leadership.”
The coalition identified the forthcoming Anambra State election as a critical benchmark for Prof. Amupitan’s leadership at INEC, alongside the imminent Osun State governorship poll.
“Considering his professional background and firsthand experience with electoral complexities, we remain hopeful that he will effectively bridge existing gaps within the electoral system,” the opposition lawmakers concluded.
“We fully endorse his appointment and pledge our support, contingent on his commitment to managing INEC with unwavering respect for the rule of law,” they affirmed.
