On Friday, Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq honored the memory of the late Chief Cornelius Adebayo, a former governor of the state. He lauded Adebayo as an outstanding leader, a unifier, and a guiding light whose influence left a lasting imprint on Nigeria’s historical landscape.

The governor underscored that Chief Adebayo’s enduring legacy of honesty and humility will remain a beacon, symbolizing his unwavering dedication to the people and exemplary governance.

Speaking at the Christian wake held in Ilorin to commemorate the late statesman, Governor AbdulRazaq expressed, “Today, we join the entire Kwara community in mourning the loss of the distinguished His Excellency Cornelius Adebayo, CON, and extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and colleagues.”

Represented by his deputy, Elder Kayode Alabi, the governor highlighted, “Cornelius Adebayo was more than a leader; he was a bridge-builder and a shepherd who played critical roles during pivotal moments in Nigeria’s development.”

“From his governorship to his activism with NADECO, his tenure as a federal minister, and his leadership within Afenifere, his commitment was consistently characterized by courage and humility. He was a true champion of democracy, principled governance, and the welfare of the people.”

“As we reflect on his passing, we are reminded of life’s fleeting nature and the lasting impact of a life devoted to faith and service.”

Family and friends paid moving tributes, celebrating Chief Adebayo’s admirable character, his influential role within both his family and the wider community, and his lifelong dedication to public service.

His daughter, Bimbo Adewoye, shared touching memories of her father’s generosity and steadfast faith. “My father’s life was anchored in his devotion to God, his family, and the wellbeing of others. He believed every place he found himself was part of a divine plan. His love for his family was profound, and he worked tirelessly to nurture harmony among his children,” she recalled.

The memorial drew numerous prominent attendees, including former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; Kwara State’s First Lady, Professor Olufolake Abdulrazaq; Senator Umar Sadiq; House of Representatives member Raheem Ajuloopin; Kwara State Chief Judge Justice Abiodun Adebara; members of the state executive council; and Commissioner of Police Ojo Adekimi.

Other distinguished guests included former Osun State Governor Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola; former Minister of Information Alhaji Lai Mohammed; NACCIMA President Alhaji Jani Ibrahim; Kwara APC Chairman Prince Sunday Fagbemi; Senator Ibrahim Oloriegbe, Chairman of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA); as well as traditional rulers including the Olupo of Ajase-Ipo, Oba Ismail Alebiosu, and the Sòún of Ogbomosho land, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, Orumógege III, alongside other royal dignitaries.
