Opposition Lawmakers Rally Behind Amupitan’s Selection as INEC Chairman

The Coalition of Opposition Lawmakers has expressed strong approval of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as the newly nominated head of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). They regard his appointment as a significant advancement toward fostering transparent and credible electoral processes across Nigeria.

In a statement issued last Friday by their spokesperson, Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, the group commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for this progressive decision, following a press briefing held in Abuja.

President Tinubu formally submitted Professor Amupitan’s nomination to the National Council of State on Thursday for ratification. Amupitan is set to succeed Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who has steered INEC since 2015 until his tenure ended in October 2025.

The opposition coalition underscored that Amupitan’s appointment is well-deserved, emphasizing his rich background in academia, law, and leadership as crucial for revitalizing the electoral body.

“As members of the opposition, we wholeheartedly endorse Professor Amupitan’s elevation to INEC Chairman,” the statement affirmed. “His exemplary career as a scholar, legal expert, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, and university Pro-Chancellor distinctly qualifies him for this pivotal role. We anticipate no shortcomings.”

They further highlighted Amupitan’s deep knowledge of electoral legislation and resolving election disputes-both theoretically and practically-as a unique advantage that will strengthen INEC’s credibility and efficiency.

“Our incoming INEC Chairman possesses a comprehensive understanding of the intricacies surrounding election petitions, is aware of current systemic weaknesses, and has both taught and applied electoral law in practice,” Ugochinyere noted. “He exemplifies the professionalism required to lead INEC effectively.”

The coalition encouraged Professor Amupitan to build a tenure characterized by fairness, openness, and unwavering adherence to electoral statutes. They identified the forthcoming governorship elections in Anambra and Osun states as vital tests of his leadership.

“We trust in his ability to deliver, given his professional expertise and principled approach,” the statement added. “Our backing will continue as long as he maintains the rule of law in overseeing INEC.”

Professor Amupitan, an alumnus of the University of Jos, holds an LL.B., LL.M., and Ph.D. in Law. He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1988 and began his academic career in 1989 as an Assistant Lecturer. He rose to the rank of Reader in 2003 and was appointed full Professor of Law in 2008.

The opposition coalition appealed to Nigerians to reserve judgment and allow the new INEC Chairman to prove his competence through his performance rather than speculation.

“There is no history of misconduct linked to him,” they stated. “Let us afford him the chance to settle into his responsibilities and begin his work. The moment to assess his achievements will come, but for now, he deserves our collective support.”
