South Korea bans travel to parts of Cambodia amid deepening scam crisis that has left 80 missing

Authorities in Cambodia are currently detaining 60 South Korean citizens amid a recent sweep targeting fraudulent job schemes.

In light of these developments, South Korea has raised its travel warning to the utmost level, issuing a “code black” alert. This advisory urges nationals to steer clear of or swiftly exit certain Cambodian areas experiencing a surge in employment fraud cases and related detentions of South Koreans.

The areas under restriction encompass the border towns of Poipet and Bavet, along with the Bokor Mountain region in Kampot province, situated roughly 140 kilometers southwest of Phnom Penh. This locale drew significant concern after a 22-year-old Korean student was reportedly subjected to fatal abuse there in August.
