Morocco Sets a New Benchmark with a 16-Match Unbeaten Run, Emerging as Strong Favorites for the 2025 AFCON
Nayef Aguerd, the former Premier League defender, has voiced his firm belief that Morocco stands as the leading contender to clinch the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2025, especially with the tournament taking place on their home soil. He foresees the Atlas Lions outshining established powerhouses like Nigeria, Egypt, and Ivory Coast.
Aguerd Applauds Morocco’s Record-Breaking Winning Streak
During an interview with Get French Football News, Aguerd expressed his admiration for Morocco’s extraordinary run of 16 consecutive victories-a feat unprecedented in international football. “Securing 16 wins in a row is an incredible accomplishment, even with the depth of talent we possess,” he stated with pride.
This streak surpasses the previous record of 15 straight wins, a mark jointly held by Spain in 2008 and Germany in 2014-both teams that went on to win the World Cup after their respective runs.

Aguerd attributes this milestone to the team’s collective talent and the strategic guidance of their coach. “Our coach has played a pivotal role in elevating Moroccan football. We have a young, dynamic squad full of promise. Breaking this record is just the start; we intend to push it even further,” he added.
Aguerd Declares: “The Trophy Belongs in Morocco”
The upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations is slated to run from December 21, 2025, through January 18, 2026. Morocco will host the prestigious event for the first time since 1988, having previously withdrawn from the 2015 tournament due to Ebola-related health concerns.
Aguerd emphasizes that playing on home ground will provide a significant edge. “Hosting AFCON brings a special kind of pressure-one that fuels our determination rather than intimidates us. We must seize this chance and ensure the trophy remains in Morocco,” he asserted.

Placed in Group A alongside Mali, Zambia, and Comoros, Morocco will confront stiff challenges from Africa’s elite squads, including Egypt led by Mohamed Salah, Nigeria’s Super Eagles, and the defending champions, Ivory Coast.
Despite the formidable opposition, Aguerd remains buoyed by Morocco’s current form, steadfast belief, and historic accomplishments, confident that the Atlas Lions are poised to capture continental glory on their home turf.
