Renowned Nigerian gospel artist Tope Alabi recently opened up about the harsh realities she endured during her childhood, shedding light on the mistreatment she suffered while living with her aunt in Lagos.
In a heartfelt Instagram video, Tope shared how what should have been a safe haven turned into a place of constant hardship and cruelty. She recounted that whenever her aunt was angry, she was compelled to grind fiery chili peppers on a stone, only to face severe physical punishment afterward. “After the beatings, she would rub the crushed chili onto my wounds,” Tope disclosed. “The agony was excruciating-it burned my skin and crushed my spirit.”
Despite these painful experiences, Tope found comfort in quietly singing and praying, moments that ignited her profound love for gospel music and fostered her spiritual development.
Today, Tope Alabi stands as one of Nigeria’s foremost gospel vocalists, her journey a testament to unwavering faith, endurance, and the transformative power of heartfelt worship.
