Ruben Amorim Shares Thoughts on Football’s Evolution and Modern Players’ Viewing Habits
Ruben Amorim, closely linked with Manchester United, recently reflected on the significant changes in football and how players engage with the sport today compared to his playing days. He expressed concern over a noticeable decline in the number of professionals who regularly watch matches, a practice he deems essential for enhancing tactical understanding and elevating overall football IQ.
Modern Footballers’ Reduced Match-Watching Raises Alarms
Amorim highlighted his apprehension about the myriad distractions that dominate the lives of today’s footballers, which he believes have contributed to a decline in their habit of watching live games-a crucial element for tactical development and inspiration.
“It’s rare nowadays to see players who invest time in watching matches, which is quite disappointing,” Amorim remarked during an interview with One Football. “The modern lifestyle is filled with distractions, causing many athletes to lose connection with the ongoing evolution of the sport.”
“Bruno Fernandes stands out as an exception-he makes a conscious effort to watch as many games as he can. Still, some players, despite their talent on the pitch, prefer to spend their free time on other activities, which is understandable.”

Amorim also praised Fernandes’s leadership qualities on the field, confirming that despite the emergence of several promising attacking talents, Fernandes remains the team’s go-to penalty taker.
“Bruno is still our first choice when it comes to penalties and has converted the majority of his attempts. While we have other capable players, I rely on his calmness and experience in high-pressure moments.”
“He has taken close to 70 penalties, missing around nine, including two during my tenure here, which admittedly frustrates me. Nevertheless, he maintains his confidence, trains rigorously, and is aware that opponents analyze his penalty style carefully.”
