The Federal Ministry of Education has reaffirmed that all candidates are required to register for and take English Language and Mathematics in their O-Level examinations.
In an official release signed by Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations, the ministry emphasized that the recent policy update does not exempt any student from these essential subjects. Instead, it introduces a more adaptable and inclusive framework for university admission criteria.
“English and Mathematics continue to be fundamental for effective communication, critical thinking, and ongoing education. The changes pertain solely to admission standards and do not remove the obligation to sit for these exams,” the statement clarified.
Education Minister Maruf Tunji Alausa highlighted that the reform is designed to foster equity and inclusiveness within tertiary education by preventing capable students from being excluded due to shortcomings in non-core subjects.
“The revision of O-Level admission policies is part of a broader effort to modernize Nigeria’s education system and bring it in line with international standards,” he explained.
“This approach permits institutions to admit students into certain programs even if they lack credit passes in either English or Mathematics, while maintaining the requirement that all candidates must register and participate in both subjects,” the ministry added.
The ministry further noted that this initiative aligns with the federal government’s goals of promoting fair access, inclusivity, and the development of human capital by expanding academic opportunities and acknowledging the varied talents of learners.
