Aregbesola Throws Down the Gauntlet to APC: Prove Your Popularity by Stopping Opposition Harassment!

Aregbesola to APC: Stop harassing opposition if you’re truly popular

Rauf Aregbesola, former Governor of Osun State and the current National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has openly condemned the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for its persistent use of intimidation against opposition leaders across Nigeria. He contends that these tactics reveal the APC’s insecurity and contradict its narrative of enjoying broad popular backing.

Speaking at the official opening of the ADC’s state secretariat in Ilorin, Kwara State, Aregbesola challenged the APC to halt its political repression if it truly believes in its dominance ahead of the 2027 general elections. He cited recent episodes in Lagos, Kebbi, and Kaduna as clear signs of the ruling party’s unease, which drives efforts to silence dissent rather than reflect confidence in their governance.

“A political party that is secure in its mandate would never resort to suppressing opposing voices,” Aregbesola remarked. “The ongoing clampdown only highlights the growing disillusionment among Nigerians with their leaders. The people are watching closely.”

Having served as Minister of Interior under the APC-led federal government, Aregbesola expressed diminishing confidence in the ruling party’s popularity. He predicted a decisive electoral setback for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC, attributing this to widespread dissatisfaction with their administration.

“The APC is painfully aware that its support is dwindling,” he emphasized. “Their oppressive measures against opposition groups are a desperate attempt to cling to power. With divine guidance, the ADC will emerge to lead Nigeria and several states.”

He also criticized the recent wave of defections by some governors and influential politicians to the APC, dismissing these moves as motivated by personal ambition rather than genuine concern for the nation’s welfare.

“These defections are not acts of patriotism,” Aregbesola explained. “They are driven by self-interest. Nigerians see through this opportunism and reject it. These politicians are seeking shelter, not sincere public service.”

As political tensions intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, opposition leaders continue to accuse the APC of exploiting state resources to suppress dissent. Aregbesola’s remarks highlight the mounting frustration within Nigeria’s political arena and reinforce demands for fairness and transparency in the democratic process.

He urged Nigerians to remain hopeful in the country’s democracy, assuring that the ADC is dedicated to presenting a credible alternative to the APC’s style of governance. “We are cultivating a movement committed to genuine transformation,” he affirmed. “The ADC will not be a party of empty promises but one that truly serves the people and rebuilds trust in leadership.”

Closing his speech, Aregbesola called on ADC members to stay united and steadfast as Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections, expressing confidence that a new political path for the nation is both attainable and imminent.
