The Lagos State Government has reiterated its dedication to transferring the well-known Computer Village from its current location in Ikeja to a newly developed ICT and Business Park in Katangowa, Agbado-Oke-Odo.
This announcement was made by Arc. Gbolahan Oki, Permanent Secretary of the Office of Urban Development, during a recent stakeholder forum held in Alausa, Lagos.
The relocation plan, which has been under continuous negotiation between government officials and market representatives, seeks to resolve the difficulties associated with the current site.
Arc. Oki highlighted that, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the administration is focused on bringing this long-anticipated move to fruition.
“The present location was originally intended for residential purposes but has since become overcrowded and unregulated, making the relocation of many occupants necessary,” he explained.
He added that Governor Sanwo-Olu’s vision for sustainable urban development has inspired the directive to establish a modern facility that will support a seamless transition.
“The government is allocating a 15-hectare site equipped with vital infrastructure such as trailer parking, hotels, banks, a police station, fire services, and other community amenities,” Arc. Oki added.
Flexible Payment Options for Traders
Arc. Oki encouraged all stakeholders to collaborate closely with the developer to ensure a smooth and well-organized relocation process.
Sam Ajose, the developer managing the new Computer Village project, disclosed that adaptable payment plans will be offered to support traders during the move. He also commended the cooperative attitude shown by both government officials and market leaders.
Mrs. Abisola Azeez, the Iya Oloja (market leader) of Computer Village, expressed confidence after the briefing, stating, “My concerns have been addressed. I urge the developer to adhere strictly to the agreed design and timeline to ensure a successful relocation.”
Important Details to Remember
It is worth noting that about a month ago, the Lagos State Government set an 18-month deadline for traders to complete their relocation to the Katangowa site within the Agbado/Oke-Odo Local Council Development Area.
During the session, Arc. Oki appealed for the traders’ full cooperation to guarantee the project’s success.
“Your active involvement is crucial for the success of this initiative. The relocation period is 18 months, and the time to start is now,” he emphasized.
He pointed out that the 15-hectare Katangowa site is fully outfitted with all necessary infrastructure to nurture a thriving commercial hub.
Initially proposed in 2006, the relocation has faced delays due to slow infrastructure development.
Arc. Oki also noted that the Ikeja location transformed from a residential area into a commercial center without formal government approval. This stakeholder meeting reflects Governor Sanwo-Olu’s inclusive governance style and his commitment to improving the living standards of Lagos residents.
