Liverpool vs Brighton: Salah returns to Reds squad for Anfield clash

Unsettled Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah has been included in Liverpool’s squad for Saturday’s Premier League match against Brighton at Anfield after talks with manager Arne Slot.

The decision was taken by Slot, who had previously stressed that he would have the final say on whether to recall Salah, acting in what he believes are the best interests of the club.

Slot confirmed on Friday that he planned to speak with Salah earlier in the day, following the forward’s public outburst last weekend, which cast doubt over his future at Anfield.

The comments had led to Salah being left out of the squad for Liverpool’s midweek Champions League win away to Inter Milan.

Salah accused the club of “throwing him under the bus” after being benched for last weekend’s 3-3 draw at Leeds, the third consecutive match he failed to start. He also claimed he had no relationship with Slot when speaking to reporters at Elland Road.

“I will have a conversation with Mo this morning; the outcome of that conversation determines how things will look tomorrow,” Slot told reporters at his pre-match press conference.

“I think the next time I speak about Mo Salah, it should be with him and not in here. You can keep on trying, but there is not much more to say about it.

“After the Sunderland game, there were a lot of conversations between his representatives and ours, and between him and me.”

Salah, who signed a two-year contract extension in April that made him one of the Premier League’s highest-paid players, is set to join Egypt’s squad for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after Saturday’s fixture.

His return date will depend on how far Egypt progresses in the tournament, which concludes on January 18 in Morocco.

Salah is the third-highest scorer in Liverpool’s all-time scoring list with 250 goals in 420 appearances. He has won two Premier League titles and one Champions League since arriving on Merseyside.

He scored 29 league goals last season as Liverpool clinched a record-equalling 20th English title, but has managed just four Premier League goals in 13 appearances this campaign.
