This call-up came amid doubts surrounding Oliver Baumann’s fitness ahead of Germany’s 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers against Luxembourg and Northern Ireland.
At just 23 years old, Atubolu’s elevation to the senior German squad significantly diminishes the likelihood of him opting to represent Nigeria internationally.

Once he steps onto the pitch for Germany’s senior team, even for a brief moment, he will forfeit any eligibility to play for Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
Despite this, Atubolu’s focus remains firmly on representing his birth nation, showing little concern for Nigeria’s national team.

“I’m heading to the national team eager to learn and absorb as much as possible. It’s a tremendous honor to be part of the German national team,” Atubolu remarked, as reported by Inter news.
The Impact of Noah Atubolu’s Selection on Nigeria’s Super Eagles
Noah Atubolu’s commitment to Germany at the senior level represents a significant setback for Nigeria’s Super Eagles, as he is a highly talented goalkeeper.
He boasts excellent ball-handling skills, agility, and authoritative presence in the penalty area. At 23, he still has ample room to develop further.

Unlike Maduka Okoye, Atubolu’s presence would have posed a strong challenge to Stanley Nwabali for the starting goalkeeper spot in the Nigerian team.
Furthermore, with Nwabali approaching 30 next June, his tenure as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper may be limited. Atubolu’s inclusion could have secured the position for nearly a decade.
