Troost-Ekong Assures Super Eagles Will Give Their Utmost Against Benin Republic
William Troost-Ekong, the leader of the Super Eagles, has voiced the squad’s resolute focus on clinching a crucial win in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying fixture against the Benin Republic’s Cheetahs. This pivotal match is scheduled for today at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium located in Uyo.
At present, Nigeria occupies the third spot in Group C with 14 points from nine matches, trailing behind the Benin Republic, who lead with 17 points, and South Africa, who have accumulated 15 points. As a nation with three African Cup of Nations titles, the Super Eagles must secure a victory and hope for a slip-up from South Africa against Rwanda to maintain their World Cup qualification hopes.
Insights from Troost-Ekong
In a media session prior to kickoff, Troost-Ekong acknowledged the uphill battle the team faces but stressed their unwavering resolve to compete fiercely until the final whistle.
“Some players are driven by the desire to leave a lasting legacy, while others aim to carve their names into the annals of history. The entire squad is highly motivated and prepared to give their all for victory,” Troost-Ekong remarked.
He further commented, “Although the final result might not be entirely in our hands, we are committed to putting forth our maximum effort in tomorrow’s match.”
The Super Eagles, who last graced the World Cup stage in Russia 2018, are under increasing pressure to deliver after a qualification journey marked by fluctuating performances and crucial dropped points.
