Manchester United secured three points with a 2-1 win over Chelsea on Saturday, but the victory was far from straightforward.
United dominated the first half and should have put the game to bed early, squandering several chances that could have stretched the lead to four goals.
Instead, the match turned on its head when Casemiro was sent off just before halftime, allowing Chelsea a way back into the contest.
Despite the setback, United held on, with goals from Casemiro himself and another from Rasmus Højlund, before Trevoh Chalobah pulled one back late for Chelsea.
What Clattenburg said
The big talking point after the match was whether referee Peter Bankes was right to dismiss Casemiro.
Clattenburg weighed in on the incident, insisting the Brazilian could have no complaints.
“Casemiro makes the referee make a decision when he dives in from behind to win the ball against Andrey Santos. It’s a silly challenge when already on a yellow card, and you can always make a case to issue a second yellow card for this clumsy challenge,” Clattenburg told United In Focus.
The ex-official added that Casemiro’s decision to grab Santos was always likely to test the referee’s patience.
“Frustrating as it may be for Casemiro, the decision to grab hold of Andrey Santos was always putting his fate in the hands of the referee, and so there can be no complaints,” he added.
The Brazilian is set to miss the next league match through suspension, meaning United will have to reshuffle in the middle of the park.
