Editors Mourn Arise News’ Somtochukwu Maduagwu and Urge Government to Tackle Rising Insecurity

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has mourned the tragic passing of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a dedicated news anchor and reporter with Arise News, who lost her life during a violent robbery at her home in Katampe, Abuja.

In an official statement signed by President Eze Anaba and General Secretary Onuoha Ukeh, the Guild lamented the loss as a significant blow not only to her media organization but also to the broader landscape of Nigerian journalism.

“Somtochukwu’s premature death represents a profound loss to journalism, as she was a passionate professional devoted to highlighting critical issues and amplifying marginalized voices. She embodied the promise and future of journalism in Nigeria,” the statement emphasized.

The Guild connected her murder to the escalating insecurity challenges confronting Nigerians, highlighting that violent crimes have become a persistent menace.

“The death of this committed journalist in an armed robbery incident underscores the daily risks faced by Nigerians both within their homes and in public spaces,” the NGE noted.

Condemning the surge in violent offenses, the Guild called on the government to take decisive action and implement reforms to curb insecurity.

“The rising incidents of armed robbery, kidnapping, banditry, insurgency, and other violent acts have fostered an atmosphere of fear and instability for citizens and professionals alike, including journalists. We urge the government to tackle the root causes of insecurity and ensure the protection of all Nigerians,” the Guild declared.

Furthermore, the NGE appealed to law enforcement agencies to swiftly apprehend those responsible for Somtochukwu’s murder. “We insist that the perpetrators behind Somtochukwu’s killing be identified and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” the statement demanded.

Expressing solidarity with Arise News, the Guild honored the late journalist’s memory and expressed hope that her dedication would continue to inspire her peers.

“May the legacy of this talented young journalist, who was taken in the prime of her life, motivate excellence in journalism despite adversity. Her vibrant spirit will remain a blessing to all who knew her,” the Editors concluded.
