Celebrate Freedom: FG Officially Declares October 1 a Public Holiday!

The Federal Government has officially designated Wednesday, October 1, 2025, as a public holiday in celebration of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day.

On Monday in Abuja, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement on behalf of the government. Since Nigeria attained independence on October 1, 1960, this day has been commemorated annually across the nation.

Emphasizing National Unity and Patriotism

In his address, Tunji-Ojo extended congratulations to all Nigerians and emphasized the importance of fostering unity and patriotism.

He highlighted the need for citizens to maintain the spirit of resilience, solidarity, and national pride that has been the backbone of Nigeria’s progress since independence.

The minister also encouraged Nigerians to place their confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on revitalizing the nation, driving economic growth, and ensuring shared prosperity for all.

Expressing a hopeful outlook, Tunji-Ojo stated that with collective effort and cooperation, Nigeria is poised to advance further in peace, development, and progress.

He concluded by wishing everyone a joyous and meaningful Independence Day celebration in 2025.

Plans for a Subdued Commemoration

Meanwhile, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, revealed that this year’s Independence Day observance will be marked with modest activities.

Addressing the Pre-Independence World Press Conference in Abuja, Idris explained:

“Under the theme ‘All Hands on Deck,’ the celebrations will be understated. We commenced with Jummat Prayers last Friday and a Thanksgiving Service on Sunday. Additionally, the National Value Charter, promoted by the National Orientation Agency, will be officially launched.”

The National Value Charter is a strategic framework crafted by the National Orientation Agency (NOA) aimed at nurturing national pride and encouraging responsible citizenship.

This charter delineates the government’s commitments to its citizens alongside the duties expected from Nigerians towards their country.
