Renowned English striker issues apology for false claims about Victor Osimhen‘s professionalism.
Gary Lineker, the esteemed British football commentator, has publicly retracted his previous remarks regarding Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen’s commitment and dedication to training.
Lineker, aged 64, enjoyed an illustrious playing career representing England, Barcelona, and Leicester City, among other clubs. Following his retirement from professional football, he established himself as a prominent broadcaster and remains a highly influential figure in the sport.
Given his stature, Lineker’s earlier critical comments about Osimhen attracted significant attention. However, after reconsideration, he has now issued a formal apology.
Lineker’s Public Apology
Best known for his long tenure as the host of Match of the Day, a role he recently stepped down from, Lineker continues to share his insights on football through The Rest is Football Podcast, alongside former England internationals Micah Richards and Alan Shearer.
In a recent podcast clip circulated on social media, Lineker expressed regret for suggesting that Osimhen occasionally skips training sessions. He stated, “I want to apologise to Victor Osimhen. I previously implied that he sometimes disappears, but I now believe that is entirely unfounded.”
He added, “Victor, if you happen to hear this, I’m sorry for spreading that misinformation. It was wrong of me to make such assumptions.”
Lineker also commended Osimhen’s impressive physicality and technical skills. His co-host, Alan Shearer, highlighted how Osimhen outperformed defenders Ibrahima Konate and Virgil Van Dijk during Galatasaray‘s recent victory over Liverpool.
Initial Comments and Context
Previously, Lineker speculated on why Premier League clubs overlooked Osimhen last summer, opting instead for less talented players. He suggested that concerns about Osimhen’s reliability might have influenced their decisions.
Having closely followed Osimhen’s progress since observing his dominance against Leicester City, Lineker praised his abilities but mentioned, “I’ve heard rumors that some clubs are hesitant because he occasionally disappears for a few days, raising questions about his character.”
Despite these claims, Osimhen’s recent performances have demonstrated his professionalism and impact on the pitch.
In the latest match against Liverpool, Osimhen left the field due to an injury. Nevertheless, Galatasaray’s head coach, Okan Buruk, confirmed that the striker is expected to be fit for the upcoming Istanbul Derby against Besiktas.
