President Bola Tinubu has called on political figures from the South-East to draw inspiration from the principles and enduring contributions of the late Michael Okpara, the former premier of the now-defunct Eastern Region.
During the inauguration of the refurbished Michael Okpara Auditorium in Umuahia, Abia State‘s capital, Minister of Works David Umahi conveyed Tinubu’s message on his behalf last Friday.
Umahi, who is also slated to commission the newly upgraded Port Harcourt-Aba Road along with seven other projects soon, highlighted the late premier’s cooperative relationship with the federal government during his tenure.
He remarked, “It brings me great joy that this structure has been restored to honor his legacy and to serve as a lasting tribute to his memory. This is truly a moment of pride.”
Umahi further shared, “The president holds deep affection for the people of the South-East and other regions. He asked me to inform you that he plans to visit later this year, likely in December.”
“Thank you all for your presence today. I also want to extend my sincere gratitude to the people of Abia State and everyone who came out to welcome us,” he added.
Earlier in the event, Abia State Governor Alex Otti reflected on the auditorium’s history, noting that since its construction in 1992, following the state’s creation, it had fallen into a state of disrepair until recent renovations were completed at the end of 2023.
“I am pleased to say that today, this building stands proudly once again. When you step inside, Your Excellency, you will appreciate the high standard of workmanship that has been achieved,” Governor Otti said.
He concluded by handing over the microphone to the president’s representative to proceed with the ceremony, while expressing gratitude to other dignitaries from the state who attended the occasion.
