Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has expressed optimism that Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), will soon be released from custody.

During President Bola Tinubu‘s official one-day visit to Abia State on Friday, where the President was represented by the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, Governor Otti revealed ongoing discussions with the President regarding Kanu’s freedom. “I want to reassure everyone that I am in active dialogue with Mr. President. He is positively inclined towards this matter, and I am confident that Nnamdi Kanu will regain his liberty in the near future,” Otti stated.

Kanu has been held by the Department of State Services (DSS) since his extradition from Kenya in June 2021. Reflecting on his long-standing relationship with President Tinubu, Otti conveyed trust in the President’s commitment to his promises.

“The President and I share a friendship spanning many years. He is straightforward about his intentions-if he plans to act, he will communicate it clearly, and if not, he will say so. Given his assurances, I believe he will honor them,” Otti added.

Speaking on behalf of President Tinubu, Minister Umahi called on the people of the South-East to foster unity and maintain peace.

“I urge the South-East community to come together in solidarity. As a brother, I have heard the concerns relayed to the President and the remarks from Governor Otti,” Umahi remarked.

“I want to reassure Senator Abaribe and Governor Otti that the governors of the South-East are diligently working towards a political resolution, collaborating closely with our senators, members of the House of Representatives, and ministers.”

“With the President’s genuine affection for the South-East, I am hopeful that a peaceful solution will be achieved. However, it is crucial that we all remain law-abiding and recognize the significant role this administration has assigned to the South-East in national affairs.”
