Troost-Ekong Reveals the Winning Formula for Super Eagles to Secure World Cup Spot

Troost-Ekong Reflects on Super Eagles‘ Hard-Fought Triumph Over Lesotho

William Troost-Ekong, captain of the Super Eagles, praised his squad’s resilience after Nigeria secured a 2-1 victory against Lesotho in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match held on Friday evening at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

Leading from the back, Troost-Ekong converted a penalty in the 55th minute to put Nigeria ahead, with substitute Jerome Adams Akor extending the lead ten minutes before the final whistle. Despite a late goal from Lesotho, the Super Eagles maintained their composure to secure a crucial victory.

Troost-Ekong’s Post-Match Thoughts

After the final whistle, the captain acknowledged the spirited effort from Lesotho’s side.

“Lesotho played with great determination. Winning here was never going to be straightforward. I understand their frustration because they really challenged us,” Troost-Ekong shared with the press.

He also reflected on the mounting pressure the team has faced throughout the qualifiers and how significant this win was for the squad’s morale.

“This match was tough. The coach can probably explain it better, but the pressure has been building since March, or even from the start of the qualifiers,” he added.

Turning Attention to the Benin Republic Clash

Looking ahead, the Super Eagles are preparing for a pivotal encounter against the Benin Republic at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Tuesday. Troost-Ekong described this upcoming match as a “must-win” scenario.

“Our focus is solely on ourselves. We have a group of players eager to improve, driven by a winning mindset, and determined to secure a spot at the World Cup,” he stated confidently.

The captain emphasized the team’s resolve to finish the qualifying campaign on a high note despite the challenges faced over the past months.

“The last nine months have been challenging. Now, with the game in Uyo against Benin Republic, we know we must score and win decisively. It will be another tough test, but we are ready. This is our final hurdle, and we will give everything to succeed. As the coach mentioned, I’m proud of the team, and we will keep fighting until the very end.”
