Taye Taiwo Blasts Osimhen, Lookman, and Others for Struggling to Secure World Cup Spots: “It’s a Shame!

Taye Taiwo Voices Concerns Over Super Eagles‘ Lack of Ambition

Former Nigerian international defender Taye Taiwo has openly criticized the Super Eagles for their underwhelming performances in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying rounds, describing their efforts as “shameful.”

The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations titleholders have managed just three wins, five draws, and suffered one defeat, casting serious doubts over their hopes of reaching the World Cup.

Insights from Taiwo

Having donned the Nigerian jersey at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Taiwo expressed deep disappointment over the team’s lethargic approach and insufficient readiness. He emphasized that the squad’s talent pool is more than adequate to secure a World Cup berth.

“It’s disheartening to witness. Considering the quality of players we have, many of whom are key figures at elite clubs, it’s unacceptable that we’re struggling to make it to the World Cup,” Taiwo stated.

“Our lineup is packed with skilled individuals; the problem is minor but somehow escalates into a significant obstacle for us.”

The ex-AC Milan defender underscored the necessity of early and meticulous preparation, citing North African teams as exemplary models of strategic foresight and consistency.

“To compete on the global stage, preparation must start well ahead of time. Take teams like Egypt and Tunisia-they began their campaigns early and emerged victorious in all their fixtures,” he noted.

“These teams now have the luxury to rotate players and rest their stars. Sadly, we lack that flexibility; we depend heavily on a core group because every point is vital.”

Looking ahead, the Super Eagles are preparing for a decisive clash against the Benin Republic in Uyo. A failure to triumph in this fixture would likely end Nigeria’s aspirations of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted jointly by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
