Since making the switch from Sporting this summer, the 27-year-old striker has netted three goals in the current campaign, a figure that suggests room for improvement.
In Arsenal’s recent Premier League encounter, a tight 1-0 victory against Fulham, Gyokeres was unable to extend his goal tally.
Insights from Shearer
Speaking on BBC’s “Match of the Day,” Shearer acknowledged that while Gyokeres doesn’t yet match the elite scoring prowess of players like Erling Haaland, Harry Kane, or Kylian Mbappe, he brings unique qualities to Mikel Arteta‘s squad.
“Gyokeres isn’t on the same level as Haaland, Kane, or Mbappe,” Shearer commented. “But he adds a different dimension to Arsenal’s attack.”
Despite his modest goal count, Shearer highlighted Gyokeres’ ability to create space and opportunities for his teammates, which positively influences Arsenal’s offensive play.
“He certainly needs to increase his scoring, yet his intelligent movement drags defenders out of position, creating openings for others. In that respect, he’s been valuable for the team,” Shearer explained.
Looking forward, Shearer remains hopeful that Gyokeres will boost his goal numbers, even if not replicating the prolific form he showed last season.
“I believe the goals will come, though perhaps not at the same rate as before,” Shearer concluded.
