Didier Drogba Reflects on Nigeria’s Challenges in World Cup Qualification
Didier Drogba, the celebrated former Chelsea striker and Ivorian football icon, has called on supporters of Nigeria’s Super Eagles to show greater patience and understanding amid their recent qualification difficulties. He highlighted Nigeria’s impressive achievement of securing the AFCON runner-up position and emphasized the intense competition across African football.
Drogba’s Perspective on Nigeria’s World Cup Journey
After a turbulent qualifying phase that nearly saw Nigeria miss out on back-to-back World Cup appearances, the team managed to secure a playoff spot thanks to a strong finish and some favorable calculations. In a recent discussion on SportyTv, Drogba was asked about Nigeria’s current struggles and what steps they could take to reclaim their former dominance.
Drogba dismissed the notion that Nigeria is in crisis, reminding critics that the Super Eagles reached the final of the most recent Africa Cup of Nations, where they were narrowly defeated by his own Ivory Coast team.
“Had Nigeria clinched the AFCON title, the criticism wouldn’t be as harsh,” Drogba explained. “That’s the nature of football; a single loss doesn’t define the quality of a team. They fought their way to the final, and yet, once they lost, the narrative suddenly shifts to negativity.”
“It’s a familiar pattern in African football. Finishing second is often dismissed, much like if a top European club finished as runners-up and it was treated as a failure.”

Drogba also acknowledged the wealth of talent within the Super Eagles squad, which naturally raises expectations. Yet, he stressed that the competitive landscape in African football is fierce, and no team can afford complacency.
“The pressure comes from past successes. With players like Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman-who have recently earned top individual honors-the team certainly has the capability to excel. But opponents don’t just roll over because it’s Nigeria,” he noted.
“A team’s reputation is one thing, but what truly matters is the work behind the scenes. If there are challenges, they will find solutions. From what I see, Nigeria remains a formidable side.”
