The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has officially inaugurated its newly constructed office in Delta State, a move aimed at enhancing the commission’s capacity to drive sustainable growth across the Niger Delta region, including Delta State itself.
During the unveiling event held in Warri, the commercial hub of Delta State, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori urged the NDDC to prioritize the rehabilitation of critical federal roads that have long posed challenges for local commuters.
“Our focus should be on repairing deteriorated roads that have caused significant difficulties for travelers. We have already allocated N35.7 billion for the reconstruction of the Warri/Sapele/Benin Road, specifically from Effurun Roundabout near the Spare Parts Market to just beyond Ohire Junction. This route is a vital corridor linking Delta to Bayelsa, Rivers, and Cross River States,” the governor emphasized.
Governor Oborevwori highlighted that the new NDDC facility stands as a testament to a collective commitment toward development, inclusivity, and effective service delivery. He stressed that genuine progress depends on collaborative efforts and a renewed focus on upgrading infrastructure, education, healthcare, and empowerment initiatives.
He further encouraged the commission to work closely with the state government on the restoration of federal roads, expressing his willingness to collaborate on projects such as the Omadino-Okerenkoko-Escravos Road. He revealed plans for a joint meeting involving the state government, Chevron, and the NDDC scheduled for early next month to strategize on forthcoming actions.
Governor Oborevwori also praised Samuel Ogbuka, the Managing Director of NDDC, for his visionary leadership and dedication to regional development, describing the new office as a symbol of institutional resilience and renewed mission.
He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu‘s Renewed Hope Agenda, noting its positive impact on strengthening state finances, promoting inclusiveness, and restoring public trust in governance. “Delta State leads Nigeria in prompt contractor payments. We operate without borrowing and have no outstanding debts to contractors,” he affirmed, pledging ongoing transparency and accountability in his administration.
In his address, Engineer Abubakar Momoh, Minister of Niger Delta Development, shared that President Tinubu has mandated the NDDC to finalize all previously abandoned projects in the region, many of which have now been completed and inaugurated.
He highlighted achievements such as restoring electricity to Okitipupa after a 15-year blackout, constructing essential bridges and substations, and launching health and education initiatives across multiple states.
The minister called on NDDC personnel to maintain the newly established infrastructure and uphold impartiality, reiterating that the commission’s services are equitably extended to all Niger Delta communities.
Both Chiedu Ebie, Chairman of the NDDC, and Managing Director Samuel Ogbuka reaffirmed their commitment to partnering with Delta State and other Niger Delta states to foster sustainable development.
Ebie pointed out that the 7th Governing Board, appointed by President Tinubu, has enhanced governance by implementing a new transparency framework developed in collaboration with KPMG.
Ogbuka described the new Delta office as a milestone in the commission’s evolution “from transactional operations to transformational impact,” with similar initiatives underway throughout the region.
The Managing Director also revealed ongoing partnerships with Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) on infrastructure projects valued at ₦650 billion, including the construction of bridges and roads. He assured that the NDDC remains steadfast in its dedication to accountability, collaboration, and the timely delivery of legacy projects designed to improve the quality of life for Niger Delta residents.
