Former Super Eagles midfielder Ogenyi Onazi offers his insights on Nigeria‘s outlook as they prepare for the upcoming World Cup playoff battles.
Once a pivotal figure in Nigeria’s midfield, Onazi remains highly optimistic about the Super Eagles’ potential to clinch a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup through the decisive playoff stage.
Although the qualifiers began with some challenges under the guidance of coach Eric Chelle, Nigeria managed to bounce back strongly, securing their place in the playoffs. At this critical juncture, they will contend with three other African teams, all vying for a ticket to the Intercontinental playoff.
Onazi’s Take on Nigeria’s Road Ahead
In an interview with Footy Africa, Onazi emphasized the team’s growing momentum and expressed strong belief that this positive trajectory will be crucial in the upcoming fixtures.
“I firmly believe the team is progressing well towards qualification, especially given the strides made lately. Although there were doubts earlier, this playoff phase represents a renewed opportunity to realize our goals,” stated the 2013 AFCON champion.
“The initial qualifying matches didn’t unfold as hoped, but the renewed commitment and focus from the players demonstrate their understanding of the importance of competing on football’s grandest stage. Their resolve is evident, and I trust it will carry them through.”

The Super Eagles’ initial playoff opponent will be Gabon. Overcoming the Panthers, who have shown remarkable consistency throughout the qualifiers, would lead to a showdown against either Cameroon or DR Congo.
Onazi acknowledged the challenge Gabon presents, noting their position as the top-ranked runner-up in the group phase.
“This will be a tough test. Gabon’s qualifying campaign was nearly flawless, and they accumulated an impressive points total,” he commented.
“We must approach this fixture with strategic discipline. The dynamics of African football have evolved, and Gabon will be a formidable adversary. I have faith in our team’s ability to prevail, but the players need to treat this match with the intensity of a World Cup or AFCON final.”

He further urged all stakeholders-players, officials, and fans-to rally behind the team, stressing that unified support is essential to enhance Nigeria’s chances of World Cup qualification.
“It’s crucial that everyone-from the players and federation to the supporters-comes together. This collective backing will inspire the team to perform at their best and bring pride to the nation by securing a World Cup berth.”
“Having missed the previous World Cup, I am determined that history will not repeat itself. If the team maintains the passion and intensity displayed in the recent clash against Benin, I am confident we will succeed.”
