With the Dutch national elections just days away, the country’s data privacy watchdog, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens (AP), has issued a caution regarding the use of AI-driven chatbots designed to assist voters. The regulator warns that these digital assistants demonstrate pronounced partiality and should not be relied upon for unbiased electoral guidance, potentially undermining the integrity of the democratic process.
In a recent assessment, the AP tested four widely used AI chatbots and found that they repeatedly favored the same two political parties, irrespective of the questions asked or the instructions provided by users. This consistent favoritism highlights a troubling lack of objectivity and raises concerns about the possible impact of such AI tools on voter choices as the Netherlands prepares to vote on 29 October.
