Thousands without power in Queensland as Victoria experiences ‘terrifying’ winds after year’s wettest day

Intense weather conditions recently impacted the greater Brisbane area and Werribee, resulting in downed power lines and widespread electricity outages. A Werribee local shared with ABC Radio a harrowing experience where their partner was briefly lifted off the ground by strong winds before being dropped back down.

On Monday morning, a severe storm swept through southeast Queensland, bringing wind gusts surpassing 109 km/h and causing power outages affecting roughly 26,000 households. In some areas, residents were struck by unusually large hailstones, some reaching up to 7 centimeters across.

Simultaneously, Victoria saw over 1,300 electricity customers lose power after Melbourne experienced its most intense rainfall in a year and a half. Fortunately, most affected areas had power restored by early Monday afternoon.
