Senator David Umahi, Nigeria’s Minister of Works, has highlighted the necessary measures the South East region should adopt to secure the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Addressing attendees in Aba during the commissioning of several projects initiated by Abia State Governor Alex Otti-an event he represented on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-Umahi stressed the need for the South East community to uphold the rule of law and demonstrate gratitude as dialogues for a political resolution progress.

This statement coincides with a growing sense of hope regarding Kanu’s freedom. Governor Otti expressed confidence that President Tinubu is positively inclined toward resolving the matter.

“I am in direct communication with the President, who is open and supportive of this cause. I believe that before long, Nnamdi Kanu will be freed,” Otti assured the audience.

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, representing Abia South, also made a heartfelt plea to President Tinubu during the gathering:

“The President has done a lot for our region, but one crucial step remains: the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. This will pave the way for lasting peace in the South East,” Abaribe declared, receiving enthusiastic applause.

Umahi responded by underscoring the collective responsibility involved. “Governors from the South East, our senators, members of the House of Representatives, and ministers-including those from outside the region-are diligently working toward a political solution. However, it is vital that we remain law-abiding and show appreciation. The President cares deeply for the South East and is attentive to our concerns.”

Since June 2021, Kanu has been held at the Department of State Services (DSS) headquarters in Abuja, following his contentious extradition from Kenya. Despite several court decisions, including an advisory opinion from the United Nations, the federal government continues to detain him, citing unresolved treason charges.
