Victor Osimhen, the dynamic forward for the Super Eagles, has publicly praised captain William Troost-Ekong for his crucial leadership role within the national team.
Although Troost-Ekong holds the captaincy, his recent appearances have been limited due to a noticeable decline in performance across several fixtures.
During the September international break, the central defender remained on the bench for the match against Rwanda and was substituted at halftime in the game versus South Africa following an unfortunate own goal.
Despite these setbacks, the 32-year-old showed resilience by scoring a penalty in the encounter with Lesotho in Polokwane, although he was again omitted from the starting lineup against Benin Republic.
Osimhen Applauds Troost-Ekong’s Leadership
On his Instagram account, Osimhen highlighted Troost-Ekong’s steadfast leadership and unwavering support for his teammates, both during matches and behind the scenes.
“A true pillar of strength on and off the field. Your constant encouragement and leadership inspire us all. Thank you, captain,” Osimhen shared in a touching Instagram story dedicated to Troost-Ekong.
After Nigeria’s emphatic 4-0 triumph over Benin, South Africa clinched their spot in the 2026 World Cup playoff phase.
In contrast, ex-Super Eagles midfielder Sunday Oliseh has publicly recommended that coach Eric Chelle consider resting Troost-Ekong for the upcoming playoff fixtures.
Oliseh contends that the captain’s peak performance years are behind him and that introducing new defensive talents could strengthen the squad’s prospects moving forward.
