Abia to celebrate citizens that contribute to State's development - Otti

…honoring the remarkable milestone of Uma Eleazu’s 95th birthday

Governor Alex Otti reaffirmed his administration’s steadfast dedication to celebrating individuals who have significantly contributed to the advancement of Abia State.

At a joint event commemorating the 95th birthday of Uma Eleazu alongside the 85th birthday of his wife, Njansi Eleazu, Governor Otti highlighted that honoring distinguished citizens has become a hallmark of his leadership. The ceremony, hosted by the Abia State Government, was held at the Michael Okpara Auditorium in Umuahia.

Governor Otti stressed that these recognitions rise above political divides, focusing purely on the positive influence individuals have had on the community.

“We urge every citizen to actively participate in the growth of Abia State and Nigeria at large. No matter your political affiliation or background, your contributions will be valued and celebrated,” he affirmed.

“Our tradition is to honor those whose achievements have genuinely transformed society. Recognition is not about age but about impactful service. We have acknowledged notable figures from diverse political parties, including APC and PDP, without prejudice,” he added.

“Abia State maintains political neutrality. Our priority is the substance of your contributions, not the noise surrounding them. As the proverb goes, it is the empty vessel that makes the loudest sound,” Governor Otti remarked.

He also welcomed constructive criticism, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to openness and meaningful dialogue.

Additionally, Governor Otti announced plans to honor other distinguished personalities, including retired Naval Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe and retired Army General Ike Nwachukwu, both celebrating their 85th birthdays this year.

Extending warm congratulations to the Eleazu family, the Governor noted that Uma Eleazu marked his 95th birthday on June 16, 2025, in Lagos, while Njansi Eleazu celebrated her 85th birthday in October. He expressed appreciation for their choice to hold the festivities in Abia State.

Governor Otti praised Uma Eleazu for authoring the book Nigeria Democracy Under Siege: Rebuilding the Ramparts of Democracy, which was officially launched during the event.

He encouraged others to aspire to leave enduring legacies, such as through literary works, stating, “If a 95-year-old can share wisdom for future generations, there is no reason others should not follow their example.”

Speaking on behalf of his wife, Uma Eleazu commended Governor Otti’s achievements, including the refurbishment of the Michael Okpara Auditorium, and expressed sincere gratitude for the memorable celebration.

The veteran statesman also lauded the positive transformations under Governor Otti’s leadership, particularly the remarkable rise in the state’s “happiness index.” He confidently predicted that the Government House would remain under Otti’s guidance through 2027.

“In just over two years, Abia State’s happiness index has surged from a negative rating to nearly 80%. Imagine the progress if Governor Otti completes his full eight-year term,” Eleazu observed.

“I am not here to flatter but to speak honestly. He truly grasps that governance is about serving the people and addressing their needs,” he concluded.

The occasion also featured the formal unveiling of Uma Eleazu’s book, Nigeria Democracy Under Siege: Rebuilding the Ramparts of Democracy, with a review presented by Ireke Kalu Onuma.
