Nwabali’s Spot Under Threat as Okoye Triumphantly Reclaims Udinese No.1 Role Against Cremonese

Maduka Okoye has made his comeback to Udinese‘s starting eleven for their Serie A fixture against Cremonese on Monday evening, ending a challenging two-month period away from the pitch, according to Soccernet.ng.

The Nigerian goalkeeper faced suspension just before the 2025/26 season kicked off in August, following allegations linked to betting misconduct involving some of his acquaintances.

While the inquiry did not directly accuse Okoye, Italian football authorities imposed a two-month suspension, sidelining him for Udinese’s first six league games.

During Okoye’s enforced absence, Romanian goalkeeper Răzvan Sava stepped in, managing only one clean sheet while conceding nine goals, as Udinese struggled to find stability.

Okoye’s suspension concluded on October 16, coinciding with the international break, and head coach Kosta Runjaic promptly reinstated him into the starting lineup.

Runjaic’s Confidence in His First Choice

Udinese’s manager, Kosta Runjaic, has publicly expressed unwavering confidence in Okoye, affirming the Super Eagles goalkeeper as his primary option despite the recent controversy and time away from action.

“Okoye has always been our first-choice goalkeeper, even during his absence. I’m pleased to have him back. Whether he will start against Cremonese remains to be seen, but he is fully prepared,” Runjaic shared on the club’s official platform.

“He has trained diligently and used this period for self-reflection, coming back stronger. We are glad to have him back and trust in his abilities.”

Runjaic also commended Sava’s professionalism and contributions during Okoye’s hiatus.

“Sava delivered commendable performances; he had previously filled in for Okoye last season, and this is a valuable challenge for him. He has my complete trust and is set to improve further. Over recent months, he has grown both as a player and an individual,” the coach added.

Udinese’s upcoming match at Stadio Giovanni Zini against Cremonese marks their first game post-international break and could symbolize a fresh start for both Okoye and the team after a turbulent beginning to the season.

Consequences for the Super Eagles and Nwabali

Okoye’s return to competitive play holds potential significance for the Nigerian national team, especially considering Stanley Nwabali‘s recent disciplinary challenges.

Since the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Nwabali has been Nigeria’s preferred goalkeeper, playing a key role in the Super Eagles’ World Cup qualifying matches in September and October.

The Chippa United goalkeeper recorded two clean sheets across four games, helping Nigeria secure a 1-0 victory over Rwanda, a 1-1 draw with South Africa, a 2-1 win against Lesotho, and a commanding 4-0 triumph over Benin.

Nevertheless, his recent on-field disputes, including a notable clash with teammate Calvin Bassey, have raised concerns about his temperament. Many observers suggest that the absence of strong competition for the goalkeeper position has contributed to his frustration.

With Okoye back in action, a healthy contest for the starting spot is likely to emerge, providing coach Eric Chelle with more options to rotate and maintain squad harmony.

At 25 years old, Okoye is anticipated to vie for a spot in the national team ahead of Nigeria’s crucial continental playoff against Gabon in Morocco this November.
